Port of Sale

Port of Sale

Wellington Shire Council engaged FJMT to revitalise the historic precinct known as the Port of Sale into a multi-use cultural and civic hub. Originally designed by Stephenson & Turner as an office building in the late-modern brutalist style, the brief for its alteration encompassed redeveloping the precinct of shared multifunctional spaces and revitalised links to the local port, providing the coastal town with a new cultural and community heart. Conveniently located in the Heart of Gippsland and in the centre of the City of Sale, the Port of Sale is an unforgettable experience with something for everyone. The project includes a regional Art Gallery with four gallery spaces, a public library, multi-purpose meeting rooms and art space, Council Chambers and function space. It also offers a Visitor Information Centre and a Cafe.

Employed by FJMT & Murchie (now Meinhardt) to assist in the lighting selection for the Port of Sale community building, we selected a range of fittings that were aesthetically pleasing to the Architect whilst functionally providing the right lighting levels required by the Engineer.

Lightnet products were selected as the feature elements throughout the various spaces. The Ringo Star provides a visual feature in the atrium of the hub. The Lightnet Ringo Star with its direct light distribution and glare-free illumination provides a striking visual impact suspended from the concertina ceiling.

Accompanied by the Matric it provides an illuminated line of sight for the staircase, again providing functionality for safety.

The Matric was used to link the various spaces into the office areas, meeting rooms and foyer areas. The continued theme of using straight lines of light was slightly adjusted in the council chambers and library by using the Liquid Line as a curved extrusion.

The library space was also supported by Lightnet products using the Matric as direction light as well as the Basic range to add character and ambience to the children’s area of the library.

The Visi was used for its semi-trimless look blending into the ceiling with anti-glare comfort light.
