Art Gallery of NSW

The Art Gallery of NSW embarked on a transformation of its historic 1988 wing, refurbishing the lower Level 3 to create a new Library, Children’s Library, and refurbishing the existing Member’s Lounge. LPA worked with Rob Harper from Rob Harper Design to deliver a sophisticated lighting solution that balanced functionality with heritage sensitivity.

The project used a hybrid control system, combining hard-wired DALI and Casambi wireless. The track lighting featured Philips Casambi ready track adaptors. This ensured the end user had the flexibility to change the lighting configuration without the need of a programmer on site. Training was provided on using the Casambi app, as well as remote access which enables LPA to implement any changes without needing to travel to the site. The library shelving featured LPA’s special asymmetric, concealed joinery extrusion on the vertical plane. Motion sensors in each aisle activate these shelves. As visitors move through the aisle, a gradual ramp-up effect is triggered. This makes you feel like the library is coming to life as you move through the space.

The Children’s Library uses more colour and playful scenery. For this reason, the area features a Linea Light Pound Track Spot with a 99CRI 3500K Cree Chip.

The Foyer is illuminated with the LPA Bricks wall washer light. The smaller Mini Pound by Linea Light is also in the foyer and highlights the white columns on either side of the space. The Bricks are concealed above the coffered ceiling which remains as part of the original detailing in the space.

The Member’s Lounge operates as a café during the day and converts into an events space in the evenings. For this reason, Rob specified a tunable luminaire. The June II adjustable spotlight uses a Bridgelux tunable LED chip to achieve a colour scale of 2700K-5000K in the space. These luminaires were commissioned as part of the Casambi network. The lighting is completely automated within the Casambi App, changing colour temperature based on the time of day. The manager can also activate performance or stage lighting from the Casambi app for an evening performance or presentation.

The Members’ Lounge showcases luxurious brass and leather detailing including a custom-built linear Matric R3 Brass pendant which stretches the full-length of the bar. Combined with the artwork and the concealed LED joinery lighting, the café is an exceptional example of modern lighting design.

Using LED technology and the latest in automation, the upgrades to the Art Gallery of NSW make for a sophisticated transformation. Beautifully subtle lighting design, which honours the building’s heritage and brings the space into the 21^st century.
