Together with BG Architecture, LPA had the privilege of providing a lighting solution for the critical care wards and break-out zones at Northern Hospital. One of four hospitals under the Pathways Mental Health Bed Expansion program, this ground-breaking project aimed to enhance mental health facilities in the community. The design aimed to create a residential feel for the critical care wards, steering away from the standard sterile environment. LPA worked with the architects to determine the most suitable lighting for the Pathway program. Our primary focus was on anti-ligature, IK-rated and tamper-proof fittings to guarantee a secure and safe environment for their patients. All fittings selected were designed to withstand the challenges unique to mental health facilities and to comply with AS1680 standards.
To maintain consistency with the design of the McKellar Centre project, we provided fittings that were identical to those used there. The selection included the Symmetry downlight, Gig wall light, Choice downlight, Sole mirror light and the Half-Round wall lights. Each of the lights were carefully selected and procured exclusively for this project. Lightnet’s Liquid Line lighting system was used to achieve curved lighting in specific areas of the facility. This versatile solution allowed for the creation of a unique and aesthetically pleasing lighting configuration, adding a touch of sophistication to the interior space.
Creating a dynamic design pattern in a range of sizes, the Basic A1 and M4 were used in the breakout spaces. These provided a functional illumination that also contributed to a calming and inviting atmosphere in the zone. The Basic M4 went beyond our standard offering, incorporating a full spectrum tuneable white LED. This advanced lighting technology allowed for precise control of the colour temperature, supporting a dynamic lighting experience tailored to the specific needs of the space. By meeting institutional-level and compliance standards, our lighting solution successfully supported the overarching goal of the Pathways Mental Health program at Northern Hospital. As a result, patients and staff can benefit from therapeutic and familiar surroundings, helping to facilitate the healing process in a safe and supportive environment. The positive impact of this collaboration inspires us to continue pushing the boundaries of excellence in lighting.
